Home Improvement Saturdays: Our Bathroom

This is the only picture I have of the bathroom
before with the oh so lovely wallpaper. It was
behind the medicine cabnit.
Our bathroom used to be wallpapered. Not just any wallpaper, golf emblem faded wallpaper. I started peeling at it one night and couldn’t stop. As happy as I am to have nice paint on the walls instead, it was quite the project.
Come to find out, the wallpaper was so old that it was put up back in the days when you had to put the glue on yourself, translation for us, extremely heavy glue left on the walls to scrub off. For those who don’t know, you have to use a mix of hot water and vinegar to scrub off as much glue as possible before painting. It helps to steam the bathroom and use a putty knife in addition to your rag.

Any who, the person who put up the wallpaper only partially removed the previous layer of wallpaper. They also choose to cover parts of the wall and parts of the first layer of wallpaper with plaster. We still never found out why. So not only did we have to strip the first layer, we had to wet down plaster and slowly chip it off to even out the walls and get to the other layer of wallpaper (but only in random spots mind you). Now the bathroom is a lovely shade of cream looks more modern. The walls are nowhere near perfect as this was our first real house project besides just painting. But they look pretty good.

We have learned no project will ever be an easy project in our house.
I also gave the baseboards, trim, and door a fresh coat of white paint.  And painted the medicine cabinet and storage cabinets white because they used to be cream.  It was weird, the floor tiles and cabinet work were all cream but the tile for the counter and shower were all white. Now everything but the floor is white. Much cleaner and newer looking in my opinion. No I didn't bother to sand first and it seems to be holding just fine.

PS. I love these wall hangings. I got
them on sale from TJMAXX for $5 each.

Note: When painting a bathroom, make sure you use a semi or high gloss finish. They are easier to scrub and repel moisture. Same goes for a kitchen. It best to prime with a moisture/mildew repellant as well.
