Quick Get Away

One Thursday morning in June, we were standing in the kitchen getting ready to send Nick off to work when Nick pops off with ‘we need to use my Memorial Day holiday, I could ask and we could drive to Hilton Head for the weekend’. Thursday afternoon, we had permission and I called our friends the L’s (our adopted family) daughter and told her we were coming in and wanted to surprise everyone. Then Thursday at five a nasty storm rolled though knocking out all power (which ended up being for just over 24 hours). That sealed the deal of wanting to get out of town for trip. Nick got off later from work than we had planned so we didn’t leave until about 6:30 with a 7 ½ hour drive ahead of us. It didn’t get dark until 10, so that helped. We got in at about 3am. The L’s daughter had been sleeping on the couch and let us in. We tried to be quiet but momma L comes down the stairs going ‘what’s going on’ and I tell her ‘you have some visitors’. We hug and then she says ‘wait, where’s the baby?’. And heads for the car to find her.

We smushed in sooooooo much in 2 ½ days. So many people to see and we didn’t even see everyone. Of course we hit up our favorite Mexican spot since we don’t have any good Mexican here and dipped Ladybugs toes in the ocean.

We left Monday at about two. Only to run into an ugly storm that pulled us off the road for 40 minutes until we decided it wasn’t going anywhere and we better just charge on slowly. At one point, after dark, it was raining so hard I couldn’t see much in front of me with standing water on the road, (we just don’t get that in California). I had to way down and just put the flashers on; but so was everyone else. Driving rant: when it’s pouring rain, don’t travel in packs! I did everything I could to stay away from other cars. But everyone else would huddle together. Hello, if one person loses control in the bad weather, you are all going down. Thanks done. Luckily we made it safely home and do not plan to overnight trip ever again.
