Homemade Detergent

I saw a lot of recipes on pinterest for homemade detergent and though I would give it a try. It’s supposed to be cheaper to make yourself. I researched a few different types and recipes, figured it all out -for the recorded they are all pretty much the same-made it, and tried it for awhile. I missed the fresh smell that detergents came with, just that scent that everything has after coming out of the dryer but the homemade stuff seemed to work. After a while our clothes when from having no smell after a washing to smelling bad and still dirty. I tried upping the amount of detergent used and cleaning the washing machine but nothing. I used a small travel size of normal store bought detergent and the clothes smelt good again but the second I went back to the homemade stuff the smell returned. Therefore, we are back to store bought and I’m cool with it. My mom and I were discussing that there must be more to detergent, like odor removing stuff or something.  I don’t know how others do it but my experience with the homemade soap was not good and I wouldn’t recommend it.

  1. Is it really that much cheaper to go out and buy all the ingredients and make your own? the only reason I would do that would be for health/allergy reasons. You know, I don't even like the commercial stuff that is supposed to be scent-free. I like Gain detergent the best because of the scent...it just smells clean to me.

    1. It is cheeper, that I will agree too and it would have lasted over a year with only 15-20 dollars on ingredients. But yes, the fresh scent I missed.
