So, evidently, I am becoming a southerner. I mean from the true south, not a southern California girl. I realized the other day that I have started saying things that only people in the south do. What is so funny, I didn’t realize I was slipping into this pattern.
My first southernism-
“y’all”. Okay, now I have kind of done this on and off
since last summer but it has gotten
worse being back in South Carolina. Moreover,
lately I’ve noticed a drawl when I do it.
Second southernism –
“Sir and Ma’am”. And I don’t mean trying
to get someone’s attention and calling after them.
It’s anytime I’m responding to someone.
‘Yes sir or Yes Ma’am. Its very southern and so proper.
A few days after I realized what I was doing. I was hosting an even at work. Everyone loves to see that I’m from Southern California on my name tag and ask me about it. This one lady asked me how long I had been in SC because I didn’t have a southern California accent. Do we have accents in southern California? Or does this mean that I’m talking more like a southerner than I thought and am picking up on a southern accent. I really don’t think that I am. I still sound normal to me (besides my y’alls and sir/ma’am things). But interesting. I can honestly say, I don’t know how I feel about turning into a southerner. As much as I love everything about the south, I’ve always been proud of my California roots.
Love it. I always say y'all and sir amd ma'am and here, people hate it when I say sir and ma'am. I just think it's ironic when it's automatic and I'm totally doing it out of respect and they get offended. Have fun in SC and hopefully we'll live semi-near y'all in a year!
